HEALTH SCREENINGS AND LUNCHEON
Wednesday, August 11 at 9:30 a.m.
 
Senior Services Associates of McHenry invites area seniors to a Health Screening. The nursing staff from Converge Home Health Care will be at the Senior Center conducting free health testing.
 
The Screenings are blood glucose monitoring and blood pressure checks, will be from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The health screenings are at no charge and no appointments
are necessary.
 
A free lunch sponsored by Converge Home Health Care will be served at 11:45 followed by bingo and prizes. Reservations are needed for lunch and bingo.
 
ALCOHOL AND THE ELDERLY
Monday, August 16 at 12:30 p.m.
 
A substantial number of older adults are drinking at higher than recommended levels
and it is a growing problem that is often ignored or missed by many healthcare
providers.
 
Even with moderate alcohol consumption, seniors run the risk of losing memory and
other cognitive functions.
 
The diagnosis and treatment of alcohol problems has become increasingly important. If you would like more information to help yourself, a family member or a friend, join us.
 
SENIOR CENTER CASINO DAY!
Thursday, August 19 at 12:30 p.m.
 
The glitter, the excitement and the games of Vegas are coming to McHenry Township Senior Center! Join us for an afternoon of horse racing, poker, roulette, dice games and bingo which guarantees that you will hit the jackpot of FUN!
 
Your reservation entitles you to your ‘Senior Center Dollars’ which you use to play at the Casino. Win as many Dollars as you can for prizes and to buy tickets for the Silent Auction at the end of the party! Let the good times roll!
 
Light snacks and beverages will be available.
Tickets are $5. Registration begins on July 19.
 
CENTURY OF MUSIC
Monday, August 23 at 12:30 p.m.
 
If you love music, this free event is perfect for you! Forget about the 24-song juke-boxes, the 78’s, the LPs, the 8-tracks, the 45s, the cassettes, the CD’s and all types of music players. The Master Music Magician has the ultimate jukebox with thousands of music selections available in a matter of seconds
which he will play for your enjoyment.
The Magician, who is a senior citizen and a member of the McHenry Township Senior Center, has a repertoire of all types of music dating from the 1890s to the 1990s and beyond. It is truly “A Century of Music” on tap for your listening pleasure.
 
“SYNERGY CONNECTION”
Wednesday, August 25 at 10:30 a.m.
 
The McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to providing support to the growth and development of the business community and to continually improve the quality of life for those who live and work in the McHenry area.
 
The Chamber has formed networking groups. Each group is made up of McHenry area business professionals who meet weekly to share business ideas. Synergy Group MC4 is comprised of professionals who specifically serve older adults. This group will be invited to the Senior Center on a regular basis to present their expertise and answer questions about their related field such as healthcare, insurance, banking, taxes, etc.
 
Light refreshments will be served. There is no charge for these events however registration is required. Call for additional information.
 
THE ULTIMATE SPELLING BEE CONTEST
Monday, August 30 at 10:00 a.m.
 
This is the zenith in Spelling Bee contests! McHenry Township Senior Center presents a unique spelling bee which takes an informal approach to traditional ‘bee’ etiquette!
 
This bee tests your knowledge on not only the proper spelling of words, but adds its own twist! The contestant’s memory will be put to the test with spelling and grammar trivia, word rules (such as “I” before “E” except after __; fill in the blank), plus clever plays on words using synonyms and antonyms.
 
This invigorating game is fun for all including the spectators. Enjoy a morning of friendly competition and thought provoking activity. Prizes and awards!
 
Contestants 50 years of age or older must register by August 25 at McHenry Township Senior Center, 3519 N. Richmond Road.

50s SOCK HOP LUNCHEON

Salvation Army Golden Diners presents a fifties nostalgia luncheon party at McHenry Township Senior Center and you are invited to dress in your favorite 50s threads!!!
 
Returning this year, the sensational tenor Jorge Holmes, singing Frank Sinatra, Mario Lanza, Elvis and the great sounds of the Fabulous 50s!

MILWAUKEE ZOO DAY TRIP
Friday, September 3; from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
 
Senior Services Associates, Inc. is sponsoring a day trip to the annual Senior Celebration at Milwaukee Zoo is a lovely day when seniors are the stars. In addition to enjoying the animals and a leisurely stroll around the grounds, participants will be able to take part in free health screenings, musical performances, and bingo.
 
The cost for the day is $17 for McHenry Township residents ($22 /Non-residents). Call for more information. Meals are not included.
 
LUCKY BUCKS LUNCHEON FUNDRAISER
Thursday, September 16 at 11:30 a.m.
 
The staff of Senior Services Associates of McHenry invites you to their exciting annual fundraiser: Lucky Bucks Luncheon! The event will be held at McHenry
Township Hall, 3703 N. Richmond Road. An afternoon of fun and prizes!
 
A fantastic luncheon of roast sirloin of beef in gravy, mashed potatoes, buttered green beans, with a delicious dessert and beverage will be followed by the great performance Tom Stanfield who entertains with song, piano and trumpet.
 
The highlight of the afternoon is the cash raffle with a grand prize of
$700.00 and three prizes of $100.00.
 
Tickets are $8.00 and advanced reservations are needed, as seating is limited.
Registration begins on August 16.

BALANCE AWARENESS & THE NINTENDO Wii
Monday, September, 27 at 10:30 a.m.
 
Preventing falls (Fall Prevention) is an important part of growing older. This educational
session is funded by a State Of Illinois grant to Senior Services Assoc., Inc. and will
provide you with safety insight, physical signs to look for in everyday life, and strength building exercises. All are important to help prevent a fall.
 
Ali Johnson, a physical therapist from Rosewood Care Center in Elgin with 16 years
of experience will present expert information in balance awareness. The Rabine Foundation has generously purchased the Nintendo Wii Fit Balance Board to aid in the fun and education. Thank you Rabine Foundation!

ANNUAL OKTOBERFEST CELEBRATION
Friday, October 1 at 11:30 a.m.
 
Celebrate autumn! McHenry Township invites you to join in the merrymaking festivities which will be held at McHenry Township Hall, 3703 N. Richmond Road!
 
The party begins with a Bavarian-style buffet featuring brats, sauerkraut and roasted chicken with mouthwatering fall harvest apple slices topping off the menu.
 
Lunch is followed by a superb traditional German band, Die Lustigen Musikanten (The Merry Musicians). Sing-a-long, dance and clap your hands to the exciting sounds of polkas, waltzes and German folk music.
 
Tickets are $15.00 which includes food, drink and toe-tapping entertainment.

ROYAL OAKS APPLE FARM DAY TRIP
Thursday, October 14; from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
 
Senior Services Associates of McHenry is sponsoring a motor coach trip to a upick
apple orchard, located in Northern Illinois on a beautiful 120 acre setting.
 
Take a wagon ride through the orchard to discover the history of Royal Oaks. After the wagon ride, enjoy the Country Market and Bakery. Visit the Apple Barn for fresh picked fall produce and their famous apple cider. And of course the delicious chicken pot-pie lunch will be served in their cafeteria style restaurant.
 
Trip includes admission, guided orchard tour, lunch, and transportation. $34 McHenry Township residents and $39 for non-residents.

SPOOKY STORIES: “The Shadow” Radio Collection
October: Friday 22, Monday 25, Tuesday 26 and Friday 29
from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
 
“Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?” The Shadow first aired on the radio, September 26, 1937 and ran for two decades. Visit McHenry Senior Center to listen to these spooky mystery stories during the month of October. Don’t be scared…join us when the famed cloaked figure influences men’s minds! Hot and cold apple cider will be served. “Crime does not pay.... The Shadow knows!”
 
ANNUAL HALLOWEEN COSTUME PARTY
Thursday, October 28 at 11:30 a.m.
 
McHenry Township Senior Center’s annual spook-tacular Senior Center Halloween
Masquerade Party. Competition for prizes for the best costumes will be in three
categories: Most Creative, Funniest and Scariest.
 
Lunch features stuffed chicken breasts, buttered parsley potatoes and glazed carrots topped off with a bewitching dessert. After lunch, play Trick-Or-Treat Bingo!
 
Tickets are $7 which includes a delectable lunch and lots of great prizes! Registration begins September 28. (There are only 90 seats available for this event.)
