Books-on- CD: Senior Center
Library
Do you like to read but you are having trouble seeing? Not
enough time to get to the library? The new McHenry Township Senior
Center Library Collection has books-on-CD that can be checked out
while you’re at the McHenry Township Senior Center.
Funding for this grant was awarded by the Illinois State
Library (ISL), a Division of the Office of Secretary of State,
using funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library
Services (IMLS), under the federal Library Services and Technology
Act (LSTA). Project Director, Maria Zawacki of the Johnsburg
Public Library, applied for this grant to expand the library’s
services.
Beginning in January, 2006, seniors who frequent the Senior
Center have the availability of an enriching new service: a
CD-book collection with ten portable CD players. The Senior Center
collection consists of 150 books-on-CD which will be rotated with
the books-on-CD at the Johnsburg Library. New books-on-CD are
regularly rotated as the library buys for its own collection so
the rotation of titles will be able to continue indefinitely.
Additionally, the library donated 200 large print books which are
on-loan from the new Senior Center Library.
The Senior Center Library will be open from 9 a.m. to 12 noon
on Mondays. The Library Collection is handled by volunteer
librarians, who check out the books-on-CD and players.
Registration is necessary when borrowing library materials.
Enabling Garden
The focus of an Enabling Garden is
to design a garden especially for people with limited
physical abilities to enable everyone the enjoyment of
gardening.
There are many people who would love to
garden but have difficulty working on the ground. Whether
confined to a wheelchair or experiencing difficulty
bending, the construction of a raised bed garden makes it
all possible
Last spring, McHenry Township with the guidance of
Kasey Murphy of the University of Illinois Extension of
McHenry County, planned and prepared an Enabling Garden.
Eagle Scout Bill Wiltse and his troop provided the
manpower by leveling the ground and constructing the
raised beds.
McHenry Township furnished the materials for the raised
planting beds including the soil, the mulch walkway
throughout the garden and an iron fence. The plants were a
contribution of the University of Illinois Extension.
The Garden is located behind the McHenry Township
Senior Center. Candie Hitchens, Senior Activities Director
at the Senior Center, organized the seniors to participate
in the daily tasks of: planting, weeding, watering and
harvesting.
The produce from the Garden is donated to the Salvation
Army Golden Diners Deli at the Senior Center for their
salad bar and the surplus is distributed to the seniors
who attend the many activities at McHenry Township Senior
Center.
