ROADSIDE CLEANUP

Picking up trash along the roads is time consuming and expensive.  It not only affects our township roads, but happens on state, county, city and village roads.  It would  be mind boggling if you compiled the number of man hours spent by these agencies picking up trash. This year alone, March 13th to April 15th, we have filled over 230 bags of garbage. This does not include the couches, chairs, carpets, cans of drain oil, tires and a host of other junk that can’t be bagged.

It doesn’t take that much effort to take that bottle or can home and put it in the recycling container, or call the garbage company for a special pick up of that couch or chair. Most retail stores, if you make a purchase, will take your old appliances away when they deliver your new one, this includes mattresses and carpeting.

Pay the tire store to take your old tires, that $4.00 or $5.00 is much cheaper than the cost of road crews to pick it up off the right-of-ways; figure the man hours, vehicle usage, storage and that proper disposal of roadside litter. The money saved by not having to pick up someone else’s trash can be put into other projects that benefit the community.  Remember—children learn by example, please be an example.

DRIVEWAYS

If you are going to repave your driveway and you live on a township maintained road, please give us a call at 815-385-3076. We would like to check your culvert to be sure it is in good condi-tion. If it is in need of replacement, we will work with you and your contractor to accomplish this.

A reminder, as posted on the website, and in the culvert permit package, "no concrete or brick past the property line".

TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT
IN ROADWAY CONSTRUCTION ZONES

Warm weather means it’s time to repair roads. Road Work signs are posted far enough ahead to give you time to adjust your speed for any unusual conditions. Remember when you see these signs, workers will be working close to your traffic lane. Follow the signs and adjust your speed, be alert and keep a safe distance between your vehicle and all traffic barriers. The minimum fine for speeding in a construction zone when workers are present is $375 for the first offense and $1,000 for the second or subsequent offense.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION

Use caution when approaching a flag person. The flagger will be working very close to your traffic lane. Slow down and be prepared to obey the signals of the flag person. You must stop if signaled to do so.

Be alert and remain stopped until signaled to proceed. When directed to proceed, drive slowly, be alert and be prepared to stop.

WOOD CHIPS AVAILABLE

Wood chips will be available at no cost to Township residents for landscaping and gardening use. The Road District dumps truckloads of wood chips in the southeast corner of the McHenry Township Recreation Center’s parking lot, 3519 N. Richmond Road, behind the Moose Lodge. Please help yourself.
